Google made AI Mode the default. Here is what actually changed for your traffic

Accendoz·

At I/O 2026 Google confirmed AI Mode has crossed 1 billion monthly users and is now the default search experience rather than an opt-in tab. Sites that depend on informational clicks are seeing the steepest declines, while businesses cited inside AI answers capture the enquiries that remain.

Google calls it the biggest change to Search in 25 years, and for once the marketing line matches the data. AI Mode is now the default surface, AI Overviews reach roughly 2.5 billion users, and industry trackers put AI answers on close to half of all queries.

The mechanics matter. In AI Mode the answer is assembled from sources the model trusts, with a small set of citations. Being the eleventh blue link was survivable in 2024. Being outside the citation set in 2026 means the buyer never sees you at all.

The playbook that still works

Structured data, entity consistency, and content written as complete standalone answers are what get you into citations. This is exactly the work most SMB sites skipped for a decade.

Track your answer share monthly: ask the assistants your customers use about your category and city, and record whether you are named. It is the new rank tracking, and right now it is winnable because so few local competitors are doing it.
