Search Console now shows AI Overview impressions. Here is how to read the new reports

Google added reporting for impressions inside AI Overviews and AI Mode to Search Console in 2026. The numbers look flattering at first glance, so read them next to click data: a high AI impression count with falling clicks tells you machines quote you but the answer satisfies the searcher.

For two years the industry begged for visibility into AI surfaces, and in 2026 Search Console finally delivered it. You can now see when your pages appear inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, separately from classic results.

Treat the new numbers as brand metrics, not traffic metrics. An AI impression means your content shaped an answer and your name was available to the reader. Whether that turns into a visit depends on the query: transactional intent still clicks, informational intent increasingly does not.

What to do with the data

Segment queries into three buckets: cited and clicked, cited but not clicked, and not cited. The last bucket is your content roadmap. The middle bucket is where you add reasons to visit, calculators, pricing, booking, things an answer cannot replace.

Watch one more split closely: pages cited in AI Overviews overlap surprisingly little with pages cited in AI Mode. Industry analysis puts the overlap near 14 percent, so optimise for each surface deliberately.
